The Upper Black Canyon alternates from rapids to calm pools, allowing paddlers a break between the action having the chance to try our fun one man inflatable Kayaks.

Pre-trip information will be provided by your guides at your hotel, the day before the trip departures.

  • Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Black Canyon - Valley campsite

Day 1: Cusco – Bus to the Apurimac Black Canyon – Wallpachaca

River Explorers guides will meet you at your hotel at  4:00 am. for a pick up and drive south west from Cusco in an spectacular 3 hours scenic drive through the Andes down to the Apurimac River. Along the way we will have stop overs for pictures and bathrooms.  Around 7 am we will arrive to the beginning of our adventure, everyone will help organizing the trip this includes, taking all the gear from the bus, pumping the rafts etc. Once everything is ready you will get your river gear (full length wet-suit, Live vest type V, shorts, paddle jacket, helmet, paddles and river shoes). You will then gather near to one of the rafts to listen the safety instructions and commands that your guides will provide, they will demonstrate paddle commands, floating positions, how to use the safety rope and ways to hold on the kayak and swimming styles. The briefing will also include instructions of how to use the one man inflatable kayaks.

The river starts gentle with pool sections perfect to practice all we have learned during the safety instructions. Only when everyone feels ready and comfortable with all the commands, we will start running the rapids.

During the first hours the River is characterized by calm pools and easy waves with a few gentle rapids and fascinating glimpse of nature at its best. Here you’ll have plenty of opportunities to jump into the inflatable kayaks, swim, play or spot wildlife or just relax while we padle until we arrive to the first rapids of the River.

As the Black Canyon narrows, nice splashy waves are to come, water tumbles over big boulders forming nice rapids. You’ll encounter plenty of action full of adrenaline and excitement running rapids between II, III and IV (note that rapids level IV can easily be avoid it, so this section is also great for groups with families and kids from 11 years old). The River then calms perfect to recuperate our breath and stop for a delicious lunch at the side of the River. After lunch, we enter to the last section of the Black Canyon. Here you’ll discover excellent whitewater runs, roller coaster rides with invigorating rapids, breathtaking wilderness which allows you to enjoy the rugged canyon walls between rapids.

After 6 exciting hours we will arrive to the end of this spectacular adventure where our van and driver will be waiting to pack all the gear, get dress with dry cloths and drive back to Cusco (Driving time takes approx 3 hours).
