The Black Canyon Apurimac Peru

Cusco is well-known as the best one-day whitewater river rafting in Peru partly because of the Black Canyon one-day rafting. The Black Canyon switches from exciting, splashy rapids to peaceful pools, offering paddlers a chance to break in-between as well as the opportunity to test out our cool single-person inflatable Kayaks.

Waterfall at Apurimac River

Cusco -Black Canyon - Wallpachaca - Cusco

At your hotel, you will be provided with a pre-tour info by your guides a day before prior your tour departure. We will pick you up from your hotel at 5:30 am and take you on a remarkable 3-hour lovely drive southwest of Cusco along the Andes right down to the Apurimac Waterway. Stopovers for photographs and bathroom sessions will happen on the way. We will get to the starting point of our exploration about 8:30 am. Everyone will participate in the organization of this, including filling the rafts with air, removing the gear from the bus, etc. Once that is done your river gear will be given to you – wet-suit (full length), shorts, type V live vest, helmet, paddle jacket, river shoes and paddles. Afterwards you all will assemble close to a raft for a safety briefing and other instructions given by your guides. They will show you floating positions, paddle commands, use of the safety rope, swimming styles, as well as methods of holding and using the one-man inflatable kayaks.

The river starts off calm with sections of its pool ideal to run-through all that was learned at the safety briefing. We will only begin running the rapids once everybody feels comfortable and ready. In the first hours, the river is branded by gentle pools and easy-going waves with just a few calm rapids and captivating nature views. There will be lots of opportunities here to jump into the kayaks, small walk to Sumaro waterfall, spot wildlife, swim, or just unwind as we paddle and approach the Black Canyon’s first rapids. With the narrowing of the Black Canyon, we will experience lovely splashy waves and water tumbling over huge boulders to form nice rapids. You will go through exciting and adrenaline-filled action as we run rapids across II, III and IV (note that rapids level IV can be avoided easily, therefore it’s a great section for family groups as well as children from 11 years of age). The river then gets gentle, ideal to re-energize ourselves and stop by for a delightful lunch at the riverside. After that, we go into the last section of the canyon. Here you’ll experience great whitewater runs, high-speed rides with stimulating rapids, and fascinating views allowing you to appreciate the jagged canyon walls amid rapids.

After 5 thrilling hours, we will come to the end of this wonderful adventure with our driver and van waiting to gather all the gear, with dry clothes to get dressed and drive back approximately 3 hours to Cusco.
