Above this little town stands an imposing fort that includes sun temples, royal baths, food stores, miradors and much more! You can’t help but feel like these ancient places were meant as ceremonial spaces rather than military ones-the placement suggests just how important they were supposed to be considered for religious rituals instead.
We continue on with the tour to Maras, a 40 minutes drive. Take an adventurous hike from the Urubamba river bed to Maras is about 60 minutes. Some people describe this place as “It looks like a piece of the moon had fallen to Earth and its white remains are filled with crystalline water.” The salt mine in Maras is more than 10 thousand square meters large and home to entire families who work there for generations. Centuries have passed, however the community members of Maras continued to work in the same way as 600 years ago, extracting the mineral that will later become commercialized.
A picnic lunch will be prepared by our cook in an atmospheric spot overlooking beautiful mountains!
By bus we continue to the incredible complex of Moray. What appears to be an abandoned amphitheater is actually the Inca’s agricultural research center.
The terraces were created by the Incas to better understand weather patterns. They knew that some climates suited certain crops more than others, so they would plant them on different levels of elevation with varying temperatures that can reach as much as 27° F, and our lowest point and 15 degrees Celsius topmost platform in order to find what worked best for each individual crop type!
